I am very frustrated. I have always lived a healthy lifestyle. Played lacrosse and swam in high school. I worked out at the gym when i wasn't in school. In college I woke up each morning and worked out...and then carried on with my daily activities.
I have since graduated college and started a nursing job. I am frustrated because my job requires that I switch shifts between night and days. I try to do 3 wks of night and 3 wks of dayshift. However I feel that I have absolutely no consitency in my life. My eating patterns are messed up and I can't seem to keep a workout program. When I work nights, my excuse is that I'm too tired and I need sleep for my next 12 hour shift, or that I haven't eaten enough calories today. (i'm 105, 5'3" if i work out too much and don't eat enough i loose a lot of weight i can't afford) During the days, i wish i could workout before work but i clock in at 7 am and the gym opens at 5:45...there isn't enough time to get to work on time...and of course when i'm on days i use the same excuses i haven't eaten enough today, and i'm too tired.
I am upset with myself because I don't know how to balance out my own health with work...but yet I get to preach to others about health.

Hey Trixxie!! Welcome to the forum!!
I think we all experience frustration concerning our exercise routines in one way or another!!
First of all - you are aware of this challenge (notice I did not call it a problem). Start small. Try to get one or two workouts in a week... even a 10 or 15 minute workout. Can you walk/bike/skate to/from work? Park your car at the far end of the parking lot? Take the stairs up/down floors to use the bathroom or go to different places... all those things count.
As you know from experience, planning your meals is going to be your best bet and a wonky schedule is a sure way to have a wonky calorie intake!!
Perhaps you can sit down and write out a meal/workout schedule each time you get your shift schedule? Don't try to make it too lofty!!! Make those small changes.

I know this may be way out there in terms of the type of advice you were requesting, but are there any other jobs available that don't have the rotating shifts?
I know I could NEVER work nights. My mom is a nurse and she works nights, so I know where you are coming from.
As far as the exercise, my guess is you are constantly moving during your shift - that counts! I think you do need to make sure you eat well, though. Again, I could see where the night shifts and the changing shifts would really mess up your internal clocks on when it is the time to eat. I wish I had some advice that I think would be useful. The only thing I can come up with is put your health first and find a job that will bring you more consistency. I know that probably isn't practical, though. I imagine hospitals pay better than doctors' offices.
