 What spices work well in place of salt?

My mother is not suppost to use any salt on what she eats. Its hard to cook things which taste good to all the others in the house without any salt, for me, but I am used to using it in just about everything. A lot of the mixtures they sell to replace salt have MSG which is very bad for your health and I do not use anything which contains it. Does anyone have suggestions? I would love to hear them.

All of Mrs.Dash's spice blends are very good try some of these. I like garlic and herb and the spicy blend

Regarding using less salt ... I have two suggestions:

1. Use Mrs. Dash's spices. They are all really good.
2. Somehow, using more fresh garlic in everything works!

mrs dash is wonderfull they have many flavors and now even grilling spices. you have to check it out i know you will love it

I completely agree, the lemon taste is really good for replacing salt...

i actually keep a True Lemon shaker right next to my stove. It's great! It's like having a fresh lemon at your finger tips...

if you want to try it, i know they give free samples out at their website..

it's all natural and has no calories or sweeteners

Here is a Saltless Seasoning "Salt"
For a zippy "low-sodium way" from salads and meats to cooked vegetables mix following ingredients and store in an airtight container.

1/2 tsp. garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, white pepper, dry mustard.

1/4 tsp powdered thyme and ground celery seed.[/font=Tahoma]

Have you tried Mrs. Dash spices ? They are great !!!!!

hi, i cook alot and what i have found to work well is FRESH lemon juice.on my counter i have a bowlof lemons and limes, i use it in everything. the smwll is great the taste is fresh and clean. hope this works for you.

I'm not sure of this but we have tried Mrs. Dash. Check to see if it has salt.

Hi Living!! Great to see you here and so active on this forum!!

I have not had the chance to come here and post as often as I used to or would like....Things are very stressful right now. ugh.

Salt. I love salt. Some people crave sweets and sugars, I crave fats and salts.

So what can you "replace" salt with? Well, salt adds flavor and big bright flavors can help replace salt. Sometimes a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime juice, a couple of turns of fresh cracked pepper, or a small dizzle of olive oil can make all the difference in flavor! a tablespoon of Parmesan cheese can deliver a wollup of flavor in exchange for very little calories!

I took a vegitarian cooking class and one of the meals we had was some basmati rice and vegitables. We topped it off with a drizzle of Almond Oil! It was SO YUMMY and BUTTERY flavored! It just took a teeny bit. Other oils you can flavor with are sesame or TOASTED sesame oil and flavor infused oils.

Take a look at some of the spice blends in the cooking aisle and make sure they do not have salt in them. Try some fresh grown herbs as well. There is nothing like fresh basil leaves on spagetti or pizza! One of my favorite flavors is cilantro - I toss it with feta cheese, pasta and olive oil or stir it into scrambled eggs.

DIG INTO THE SPICE CABINET and start experamenting and HAVE FUN!
