After about ten minutes on the elliptical trainer my toes start to get numb. What am I doing wrong? — A. Johnson, CA

Bonnie Moore

First try changing or loosening your shoes. If that doesn''t work, it could be that your feet may not be adapted to the movement of the elliptical trainer.

If the trainer has a ramp adjustment lower it as much as possible to decrease the forces on the forefoot. If that''s not an option, spend less time, say a few minutes less than it takes for the numbness to start. Get the balance of your workout in on another piece of aerobic equipment. After two weeks of eight minutes on the elliptical, try adding an additional three minutes. Give it a test and see if your feet will allow for 11 minutes. If that works, progressively add three minutes every two weeks as long as you don''t feel the numbness come back.
