Question:

Every day I have a morning snack of an apple with a tablespoon of peanut butter. Is this okay? I know peanut butter is high in fat but it seems to keep me satisfied until lunchtime. — Clairey, NJ

Christine Palumbo

Answer:

Peanut butter is a great snack, provided you limit the portion size! One tablespoon of peanut butter has 95 calories, about 8 grams of fat, and 4 grams of protein. (Surprisingly, the reduced fat version contains the same number of calories, but a bit more sugar.) The protein and the fat combine to satisfy and "stick to the ribs" longer than a snack with carbohydrates alone. You've hit upon a successful snack, so stay with it!
