Trend: Food Industry Focus

Twenty years ago, fewer than half of Americans had a weight problem. Now obesity may soon overtake smoking as the leading cause of death. Surprisingly, when asked what Uncle Sam should do, nearly a third of those surveyed said it isn't the government's responsibility to help Americans lose weight. Another third chose improving nutrition and physical education programs in schools as the top priority for the government.

Instead, survey respondents put the onus on food makers and restaurants, calling on food companies to produce healthier foods and restaurants to offer smaller portions and provide nutrition information on menus.
